3D laser polishing platform

The 3D laser polishing platform stands out amongst the various possible machine configurations and laser processes as highly innovative. This is due both to its structure and the particularities of the available process features. This new generation of machines provides Unitechnologies’ customers with new opportunities, be it with regards to possible surface processing applications, an increase in productivity or a decrease in the polishing costs.

Main advantages

On average laser polishing is 10 times faster than all conventional mechanical polishing processes, regardless of whether these are automated or manual. The benefits are even more significant on complex parts requiring a very high accuracy and an excellent repeatability.
The laser polishing process is based on the localized melting of the surface layer of a part. The chosen surfaces are scanned with a pulsed high frequency laser. The material melts locally with the passing of the laser and resolidifies subsequently. The surface tension smoothens the material and as a result eliminates unevenness. With this process, no material is removed, making it a viable possibility for working in controlled environments.
Due to the positioning precision, as well as the 8 degrees of freedom of the system, only the selected surfaces are processed. As a result, the surfaces adjacent to the polished surfaces are not affected and  can be processed differently – kept raw or textured for example. At the same time, the edges of the component to be processed remain untouched during the polishing process, avoiding damage and further expensive reworking operations. This is generally not the case with well-known traditional polishing processes such as “tumbling”.
Micro-scratches in the material are avoided during the laser polishing process, which makes this process suitable for medical applications, especially for components in contact with bacteria.
For aesthetic purposes, large surfaces can be pre-polished. Depending on the material and the initial surface condition, the laser polishing improves the roughness by a factor of 3 to 10. A subsequent finishing with a mechanical polishing process offers a better shine, especially on large surfaces. Therefore, including a pre-polishing step using a laser system can drastically reduce the required time of a mechanical polishing process.
